At Food Link Society, we provide the essential link that connects surplus food, food that would otherwise go to waste, to people who need it most.
Last year alone, we recovered food valued at more than $9 million and prevented over 4 million pounds of CO2 equivalent emissions from entering our atmosphere.
But beyond these numbers lies something far more important: the lives we’ve touched and the families we’ve helped.
Meet Daniel
Daniel (name and photo changed) is a student who had reached a breaking point at school. He was acting out, falling behind in his classes, and eventually asked to leave. On the surface, it looked like a behavioral problem. But Tine, an administrator with Healthy Futures for SD#44, looked deeper.
What she discovered changed everything. Daniel was hungry! At home, there wasn’t enough food. He went to school without breakfast, without a nutritious lunch, and often without dinner. How could he possibly focus on learning when his most basic need wasn’t being met?
All because his family received nutritious food that otherwise would have gone to waste.
These experiences show us that food is more than nourishment. It is dignity. It is opportunity. It gives children the chance to learn and families the chance to breathe easier.
The Reality We Face
Daniel’s story is not unique. There are hundreds of children like him in our schools— children who come to class hungry, unable to learn, unable to thrive. Hunger in our communities is real, and it’s growing.
Yet at the same time, grocery stores and farms have surplus food that, if not used quickly, goes to waste and adds to our environmental problems. Food Link Society recognizes this travesty and is creating the links to ensure this food reaches families in need instead of landfills.
